Don't fall over
Location: Home
Been a while? Yeah it has.
I look back at the length of time that it took me to turn this site in to what it is now, and still I think, why on earth am I surprised that I have no time to update it? In case you have are blissfully unaware, having a family, a house and a job is almost all consuming.
So many things have happened in the time that I haven't posted. Friends have moved, children have grown, parents have gotten older. Global technology advancements, global disasters, riots in London. Oh, and I've been told that the medic-o's want to remove some of my insides. You know, the normal. Happy days. </end sarcasm>
Anyway, one thing at a time. This post is me trying to start again - again. (again)
Wish me luck!

Finally!
If you know me, you will konw that I'm not small. This has started to "pay off" (so Dad says).
All my life, Spud has been able to pull and push me, and now I can do it to her! I heard Mum and Dad say that because Spud has been doing it to me, she has made it ok to do. So I think I will wait till she isn't looking.

My Bike
Cookies birthday was just recently, and he got a riding car. I have had lots of fun with it. It has a phone on it!
Anyway, Mummy and Daddy tell me that I need to let him ride it. I don't know why - he's not very good at it. But this did help me find my bike again.
Since then, I've loved riding my bike. It's good fun! I ride it around the table in the kitchen, and .... Oh, Daddy tells me it's a tricycle, not a bike... but I ride it and the back wheels slip and I spin around! It's great
We played in the sandpit and on the tramampoline today to.

Milk... comes in THAT!?
I am meant to be in bed. But I wanted to say something has changed here.
I used to get my milk from Mum, but in the last day or so, I have got milk in a bottle. But it gets better. Dad gives it to me to! I am a bit ekci ... exsi... excited about it, but it is strange too.
It's how Lizzie used to have her milk, and she told me it's ok.

Facebook
So, just recently, I've entered the fray on Facebook (FB). I’ve held off for so long due to security concerns, privacy concerns and the plain lack of time. However, the time came at work, where 'social' steps needed to be taken, and I had to reconcile those concerns.
In my three or so weeks using FB, I’ve discovered that the privacy aspect is something that many users have little knowledge or understanding of. I believe also, for someone to say that they “don’t care” is purely an indication of one of those.
Firstly, my pre-FB-member concerns were that I didn’t want a company with FB’s chequered past* knowing my social network connections. It didn’t occur to me the first time, but I was getting FB emails every year or so saying things like, here are people you might know, plus a like to another 120 people you may know. Every year they were different people, and every year, I knew all of them. They already knew my social network! (Oh, and did you know you can’t block Mark Zuckerberg from viewing your profile? And any of the FB staff override normal access & security for trouble shooting.)
Secondly, I’ve realised that tons of people don’t know the dangers in the combination of casual home snaps, geo-location and voicing your travel plans. And this was before being able to check-in to places. (See note 3 below) I plan to write about this more another time.
And thirdly, apart from the fact that you’re willingly supplying FB with the ability to target ads at you. Apps can now see your phone numbers and your address. How many viral & fun sales-y apps do you know of? Do you get enough calls at dinner time?
Would you like some more?
Finally, what kind of a guy would I be if I didn't give you something to help? Sophos.com has some helpful tips about your FB Settings. (Please note their menu on the right.) And again, if you Google "Facebook best security settings" you get lots of helpful results.
~~~~~~~
*These are some links that came to mind. Although, if you google something like "Facebook privacy issues" you get ~ 376,000,000 results
1) Apps can see your address and phone number, plus other information about exploits within FB at http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/
2) Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook users eventually get over privacy anxiety. (What nerve)
3) Facebook Burglaries Story
Adobe Upgrade
Just upgraded Adobe CS3 suite to CS5.5 today at work. I had forgotten how much of a time commitment it was! And to top it all off, I'd lost all my proprietary - but important - file types and code colouring! Noooooooo!
So I did the old method that I've been doing since Studio MX and it didn't work
. As you'll see from the below, Adobe is trying to make it harder for us.
Step 1: Add the file type.
In Dreamweaver’s preferences (Edit > Preferences or Ctrl + U). go to File Types / Editors. Add .the file type to the line “Open in Code View:”. The defaults for mine were: .js .asa .css .cs .config .inc .txt .as .asc .asr .vb .htaccess .htpasswd
Step 2: Edit the file MMDocumentTypes.xml File.
This file exists in two places. You must update both (for all I know.)
a) C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5\configuration\DocumentTypes\
b) C:\Users\Mister\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS5.5\en_US\Configuration\DocumentTypes
Place it inside the winfileextension and macfileextension attributes. (If there is only one entry, just put a comma and then your new file.) My experience says that you only have to put it in the OS that you're using, but hey, safe than sorry, right?
Step 2: Edit the file Extensions.txt File.
Add the file type to the first line (All Documents) and relevant specific line. Mine was to be parsed as asp, so I just tacked it on the end of it.
Also found in two places:
a) C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5\configuration\
b) C:\Users\Mister\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS5.5\en_US\Configuration
Step 3: Restart Dreamweaver.
Mine was fine after this, if not talk to Adobe!
Note: If you are using Windows 7 and are unable to save the file, try editing it as the Administrator. ie: Right-click on the editor you want to use, select "Run as Administrator", then open the file in that editor.
What is a Browser?
I was astounded by the video on this Web Designer Depot page.
Like most other people in the IT industry, I have an aversion to Internet Explorer - however, I must say, they've done much better work with IE9 - but I'm not sure I'm ready to trust again.
Anyway, this prompted me to write this to let people know what exactly we're talking about when us young'n's talk about our "fancy internet stuff".
A Browser is the program that you open to see the internet. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then think about the icon (button) you click on to get to the internet. That icon opens your browser.
While I'm on the topic, your Operating System is the software that runs your computer. Broadly speaking, it'll be Windows or Mac (yes, there are other options).
Lastly, Google is not the internet. It's a search engine. They're already getting their fingers into every pie. Let's not give them too much now, k?
Mega Easter Weekend
Location: Out of the rain
Well, what a productive Easter / ANZAC weekend we've had. Not only have I finally made a start on fixing a little used door handle, but we've painted Cookies room & the ceiling in the kitchen, tidied the shed, cleaned some of the house, moved mulch, trimmed plants and seen the grandparents... No wonder I'm tired.
We should have more 5 day weekends.
Don't get me wrong, I love Spud, and she's very cute, especially when she's saying any of the following: Television, Elephant, Guitar or Chiropractor.
They come out as Tevalision, Ephalent, Tigar and Pyrodactor.
April Fools
Location: Behind you
I've been impressed this year with the quality of the online April fools that I've come across today.
BMW M3 Ute (SMH, Car Advive & Video) This was the third one that I saw, and by this stage, I knew that I shouldn't believe anything I see today.
Gmail Motion (Google Mail) Saw this one just now, and couldn't help but chuckle at the facial expressions of the guy doing the motions. (I liked the one from last year too.)
IP Version 4.5: (Sitepoint) This was the first one that I saw, and I fell for it hook, line and sinker - until I got halfway through that I realised what the date was (a la my comment on the page). Just saw then that the info graphic even spells FOOL. Cute.
Oh, and I've just found this: The Wikipedia page of Googles Hoaxes. (Favorite: Searching for Helvetica shows results in Comic Sans!)
What a good end to the day. Now to play Quake Live.
Smiles
I've decided that I like making people smile & laugh.
Tonight I bumped heads with Daddy, and I said "suck it up princess" and everybodys laughed. It was very funny. But for some reason the more I said it, the less funny it became. I don't understand that.
I've also been yelling "YAAAAY DADDY'S HOME!" when Daddy gets home. That gets lots of smiles and hugs!
Misquotes and turmoil
Late last year, I quoted for a project at work. And I've never been so wrong before.
I don't know where I went wrong, or how I could have misjudged this, when this client has been one of the best, "non-goal-post-changey" client. In one way we're blessed, because this particular client has been so patient.
So what do I do, now that I'm over 2.5 times the aloted time, and weeks past due? Plodding on, giving them the best darn product they've ever seen is the obvious answer. Hoping ever so much that they think, "D00d, this project is like FULL SICK man. No wonder it blew out. I appreciate the effort you put in, and that you took one for the team on the costing!" ... yeah, it'll never happen.
Anyway, if you have suggestions, let me know.
I need a break
For those of you who don't know, I keep my movie tickets. I've kept all of them. Which is the opposite of Mister, he keeps no movie tickets, and hordes everything else... but that is another story.
Having kids has put a stop to the impromptu movie outings, the badly planned movie outings and... well, we haven't been to the movies since before Spud was born.
Perhaps this year will be different. The need to have a break has become very apparent. So much so that we've had a lovely un-prompted offer of baby-sitting from someone at church. Another first for us. Nobody outside of family has done this. I wonder how the kids will cope?
Games Night
So I fire up Flyff for the first time in about 18 months, and think I wonder how many people I know will be on there. The answer was a simple, round number. Zero. "What happened, where is everyone? This place is like a ghost town" I thought to myself. For months I had played this, made iFriends and leveled up my nine characters... and... well, that was it really.
I can't help but feel that all that time was futile and wasted if I'm never to play it again. It's rare that I get time to do a serious amount of gaming. Even the family friendly Wii games. What could I have accomplished with that time? Could I have learnt to skydive, found inner peace, solved world hunger or finished building this site?
So perhaps this is the end of Flyff for me. What is the point of a MMORPG if it is no longer MM. PMORPG doesn't have the same ring.
I guess I'll add it to the "Games-that-I've-invested-my-precious-time-into-that-I-should-have-been-doing-something-better-because-I-no-longer-play-them" pile.
- Flyff - Fly For Fun
- Adventure Quest
Meh, I'm going back to FPS's like QuakeLive.
When I say...
My occasional Twitter browsing, turns up some gems sometimes, and today I came across this poem. (Which has possibly morphed from this 1988 version.)
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I’m not shouting “I’m clean livin’.”
I’m whispering “I was lost,
Now I’m found and forgiven.”
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I don’t speak of this with pride.
I’m confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I’m not trying to be strong.
I’m professing that I’m weak
And need His strength to carry on.
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I’m not bragging of success.
I’m admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I’m not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.
When I say… “I am a Christian”
I’m not holier than thou,
I’m just a simple sinner
Who received God’s good grace, somehow.
I remember from my days at uni that certain people would not know what to say next, apologise or change the way they interacted with me entirely if I said I was a Christian. Like they were expecting me to instantly judge them and condem them to hell there and then. Others would watch & wait for me to 'slip up', and then say, "I thought you were a Christian".
Just so it's out there - I'm not playing "Whoever judges first wins", and I'm certainly not perfect. I'm just like you, but I've found something exciting, someone who helps me and gives my life a purpose & direction.
That's why I do what I do.
"Do we keep backups?"
Today, I heard one of the "sinking feeling" phrases... "Ummmm, Mister? Do we keep backups?"
Well duh. Of course we have backups - multiple backups in multiple locations. I know that it can be taken too far, but personally, I have backups everywhere - sometimes, it's just better to get the previous working client-is-happy-with version of the file, than fix whatever mayhem that's been caused by a designer co-worker.
This was going to be a rant while I wait for files to decompress, but since you're here...
Things that are good to have / know when you want to backup "stuff".
I've long since abandoned WinZip, but I know that some people still use it so here's Winzip command line . I prefer 7-Zip. I've never had need to try the Command line, but the bits I've used are good. Very simple & unintrusive. (Of course, you might want RAR's, so there's WinRAR.)
I tend to go straight for scripts & zips. Things I've written / scheduled myself. It's cheap and does what I want, when I want (hopefully). I know there are backup programs out there, but I have to buy, test and release them. I've never needed one yet. (Googled windows server backup programs.)
You might have noticed by now that the above are all Windows programs. That's because it's what I'm dealing with as we speak. And really, if you're doing this on Linux, you should already know this stuff. If you don't, look up crontab & write a script. Or you could google linux backups.
Oh, look, it's finished!
